Games get more widely accepted as forms of art recently,
but does that make every video game artistic?
I wouldn't say so.
Especially AAA games are rather a work of craft, than artistic expression.
They are meant to entertain the customers and thus mainly be a financial success.
That brings me to what artistic games are to me.
I think that every game which tries to get a deeper message across can be seen as artistic, while every game is art.
For example, the creative director of the game Flower tries to express
"the tension between urban bustle and natural serenity".¹
This intention came from his personal experience, when he moved from the very urban Singapur
to the more rural LA area.²
In other words, games which act as a way of the developers to express themselves can be seen as artistic.
